How much was the impact done to Earth from the meteorite to the dinosaurs?

Filed under: meteorite — admin @ 7:23 am

I heard that a meteorite before Man was born that it wiped out all the dinosaurs in the whole of Earth.

How can the impact of the meteorite wipe out all of the dinosaurs across Earth?

It was an exceptionally large and powerful impact involving a ten kilometre diameter lump of rock travelling at high speed. That’s kind of the equivalent of simultaneously detonating the entire arsenal of nuclear weapons, except that comparison would be an underestimate. Nevertheless, the result would be more than a slight bang.

Whether that impact 65 million years ago accounts for the entire extinction even(s) is another matter. It certainly seems to have contributed.

Update
<<it landed in what is now the Gulf of Mexico about 40 million years ago>>

65 million is about accurate.

How is the composition of a meteorite relevant to finding out the composition of Earth’s core?

Earth and meteorites were formed out of the same stuff. The meteorites have not been subject to the heating that has permitted much of the heavy material to migrate to the earth’s core.

When a meteorite hits the earth and leaves a crater, where did the meteorite go?

Filed under: meteorite — admin @ 9:23 am

you always see pictures of the crater, but u never see the meteorite. So what happens to it?

It depends o the size of the meteorite, and its composition.

If the meteorite was small, less than a metre in size, it might survive impact (especially if it landed in soft soil). Smaller ones could actually be picked up, because they would have been cooled as they fell through the atmosphere.

If the meteorite is large (say more than twenty metres across), the force of impact will be so great that not only will the meteorite shatter, but if it is metallic, it will melt or even evaporate. The contents re-bound out of the crater, and get spewed over the surrounding area (ever wonder where the material went that was where the crater now is?). One group of entrepeneurs didn’t realise this, and tried to mine the Arizona meteorite crater for the nickel that would have been in the meteorite; but the contents of the meteorite had evaporated, and been spread over thousands of square miles.

A very large meteorite of a few kilometres in size would have a dramatic effect, raining molten rock down over a wide area, and pumping masses of dust into the atmosphere. Life would not be the same, and they say this is what happened to the dinosaurs (I’m not yet convinced).

The impact of a gigantic meteorite of a hundred kilometres or more across would melt the earth’s crust for hundreds of kilometres around, and cause cataclasmic earthquakes that would destroy just about every man made object.

Did anyone seen a meteorite falling from the sky and illuminating thesky similar to thunder ray?

Filed under: meteorite — admin @ 11:32 am

I live in Southern Maryland (To be specific St. Charles county). This night between 9:00 – 9:45pm I saw a meteorite falling from the sky, and when it hit the ground, it illuminated the sky similar of how a thunder rays lights the sky. It was weird first experience and just hope it didn’t hurt anyone. Did any of you seen this meteorite or have seen a meteorite similar to what I’ve seen in the past?

I saw something in Southern Anne Arundel County last night at 9:30. It looked like a meteorite and it fell near our church. I was online tonight and on msn.com was this article:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29958635/?GT1=43001

It says it was exploding space junk from the second stage of a Russian Soyuz rocket falling back to Earth.

Although it says VA…I would imagine it was the same thing.

RAW All Angles: Massive Fireball Meteorite Streaks Across Midwestern United States

THERE WILL BE SIGNS

Authorities in several Midwestern states were flooded Wednesday night with reports of a gigantic fireball lighting up the sky, the National Weather Service said.

The fireball was visible for about 15 minutes beginning about 10 p.m., said the National Weather Service in Sullivan, Wisconsin, just west of Milwaukee.

“The fireball was seen over the northern sky, moving from west to east,” said the NWS in the Quad Cities area, which includes parts of Iowa and Illinois.

“Well before it reached the horizon, it broke up into smaller pieces and was lost from sight,” the service said. “Several reports of a prolonged sonic boom were received from areas north of Highway 20, along with shaking of homes, trees and various other objects including wind chimes,” it said.

It said the fireball was seen across parts of Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. CNN affiliate WISN-TV said that people in Ohio also saw it.

Video from WISN showed a massive ball of light exploding across the sky. The Doppler Radar from the Quad Cities weather service appeared to capture a portion of the smoke trail from the fireball at just after 10 p.m., the NWS said. It appears as a thin line extending across portions of Grant and Iowa Counties in Wisconsin.

There has been no official determination as to what caused the fireball, the NWS in Sullivan said.

However, it said there is a meteor shower called Gamma Virginids that occurs from April 4 to April 21, with peak activity expected on Wednesday and Thursday.

“A large meteorite could have caused the brilliant fireball that has been reported,” the National Weather Service said.

The NWS in Quad Cities said that it was unknown if any part of a meteorite hit the ground.

According to NASA, a meteor appears when a meteoroid — a particle, chunk of metal or stony matter — enters the Earth’s atmosphere from outer space.

“Air friction heats the meteoroid so that it glows and creates a shining trail of gases and melted meteoroid particles,” it said. “People sometimes call the brightest meteors fireballs.”

What characteristic distinguishes a meteorite from a terrestrial rock?

Filed under: meteorite — admin @ 4:37 pm

1.Meteorites have different isotope ratios of particular elements when compared to terrestrial rocks.

2.A meteorite usually has a high metal content.

3.A meteorite is usually covered with a dark crust from burning in the earth’s atmosphere.

4.All of the above are true.

5.Meteorites contain rare elements, such as iridium, that terrestrial rocks do not.

1., 3., and 5. are true.
