Does asteriods and comets fit into our current definition of planets?

No. Just Google the word "planet". and find the three main requirements.

What is the highest score ever for the Asteriods game?

Filed under: asteriods — admin @ 9:23 am

I found this article on the Internet from Yahoo! Games regarding the Guiness Book of World Records for video games.

http://videogames.yahoo.com/events/guinness-gamers/guinness-gamers/1290100/6

I remember when the game first came out in arcades (yeah, I’m old…) there was a guy who played for several days straight to get into the record books. Yeah, straight. I remember seeing news footage of his mom or friend shoving a twinkie in his mouth, followed by a straw in a bottle of pop to help keep him awake. I think he did take naps – he’d park his ship over in a corner or something, and lose a handful of ships, then get back to work.

Is there any way we can tell if the earth will collide with comets and asteriods any time soon?

Filed under: asteriods — admin @ 11:32 am

So like will there be any warning about it .So is there a way of scientist being able to tell.
Also is there any way we could help stop or prevent a collision
Thanks it will be a great help :)

Currently there are none on a collision course anytime soon. Telescopes and other devices can detect these objects, and tracking by these scopes and radar is used to refine their orbits. From there they combine the projected orbits of these objects with the orbit of the Earth and note any near misses or potential collisions. Early in the detection period a rough orbit is calculated for these objects and as more time passes the orbits are better known, which is why many times a relatively greater potential for an impact is reduced, due to the orbit being more precisely calculated.

Current ideas to deal with potential hits by one of these objects include intercepting it far away from the Earth and using nuclear strikes to deflect the object sufficiently to cause a miss. The further away the better, as you would need more of a deflection the closer to Earth it would be.

Lay me down til the brake of dawn
You feel the heat there is no way to return

how do scientists tell the difference between moons, asteriods, and comets?

Filed under: asteriods — admin @ 4:37 pm

Moons orbit a planet.

Asteroids are small (compared to a planet) rocky bodies orbiting the Sun.

Comets are icy bodies orbiting the sun, usually in highly elliptical orbits. New comets usually have a tail, however the more times a comet has visited the sun, the less volatile material the comet will have left to form a tail. Also, if the comet stays outside the orbit of the Earth, it will tend to not get warm enough to melt water ice. This will not prevent other ices (CO2-dry ice, methane ice) from forming a tail.
