The effect of the asteroid (or similar cause) was to reduce sunlight reaching the earth’s surface.
This led to overall cooling which has a drastic effect on cold blooded animals such as dinosaurs.
The secondary effect is the reduction of plant life due to the lack of sunlight. The ocean is also dependent on light as it promotes growth of phytoplankton and algae which are the first part of the food chain.

What would you do if an asteriod was going to impact Earth in 1 week and almost definitely extinct the human race?
Since our planet moves in orbit , if we were to nuke it with enough time to slow it down or change its trajectory, we would be Barbecuing next week cause it would pass by us … if not one nuke send a thousand (if it threatened our survival as a planet)
