i’ve seen a million things on how they died, but i dont understand how everything else lived. maybe not everything lived, but how did enought survive to have so many different species? i understand with plants that the seeds could jsut stay in the ground and grow at the right time, but with animals i am confused.
Many, many species became extinct from the impact and its after-effects (take a look at the web site). However, not everything did. For example, dinosaurs were mostly cold blooded. The very small mammals present were not, and may have been able to survive because of this (they produced their own heat and didn’t rely on the sun). For specific discussions, take a look at the third web site.

how did the an asteriod kill the dinosaurs but not everything else?
So before Adam ate from the tree there was no asteriod belt, no comets, no black holes, the moon wasn’t dusty?
The universe was perfectly ordered and neat. Then Adam ate a fruit and planets started to collide, chunks of ice and rock started hurtling through space and smashing into planets, dust rings formed around saturn, black holes started sucking up planets…..
All that from 1 bite of fruit, right?
No they were doing that before he ate the fruit.
Who thinks a comet will hit 2012?
I have been watching videos on prophecies that have been answered, including the BP oil leek, and one of the prophices, that is not to far away, is that a comet will hit our planet. This could also be because of Niburu or Nemisis.
There is no comet on a collision course with Earth at any time in the foreseeable future. An oil leak cannot cause the end of the world. Nibiru, Nemesis, and Planet X don’t exist.
The 2012 doomsday scenarios are nothing but wild speculation by the scientifically challenged. The world isn’t going to end in 2012. The claims that scientists are predicting doomsday in 2012 are lies. Don’t worry about it. It is just people making money off books, advertising, "survival kits", and whatever else they can dream up to sell.
There were no ancient prophecies concerning 2012 until they were made up in 2003.
The whole thing started out with unqualified people (Jose Arguelles and Zecharia Sitchen) misinterpreting the Mayan calendar (it doesn’t end, it merely recycles) and ancient Sumerian writings about the planet Jupiter. Then a woman named Nancy Lieder, who thinks she hears messages from aliens in her head claimed that “Planet X” would return in 2003. When that imaginary planet (unsurprisingly) failed to appear on schedule, she decided to hijack Sitchen’s imaginary planet for her alien fantasies. She changed her doomsday to 2012 to agree with Arguelles unique interpretation (unique in this case meaning that no actual Mayanist scholar agrees with it) of the Mayan calendar. It has been all downhill from there. People keep tacking on new fantasies, none of which have a shred of scientific validity.
They make up new scenarios of doom faster than scientists can debunk them, and they actually claim that scientists are saying these things. No scientist is claiming any doomsday scenario for 2012. Also, all the claims of prophecies for 2012 are false. No one predicted it before this bunch of scam artists started it to make money. They just throw in some scientific sounding terms, slam them together into a mishmash of meaningless prattle and figure if they can’t dazzle you with brilliance, they will baffle you with bullsh!t. Don’t be fooled by that.
Unfortunately, the History Channel, which used to be a reputable information source, gave up their credibility for better ratings and jumped on the 2012 bandwagon. Too many kids believe everything they see on the internet and are unable to discern a reputable scientific website from a crackpot one.
This whole pile of garbage just keeps growing. Don’t worry about it. It is just people making money off books, advertising, "survival kits", and whatever else they can dream up to sell.
Here is a really good website that covers all the various claims about 2012 and about the charlatans who are promoting it. Go to it and read about the things that have you concerned. They give sources for their information and they aren’t selling anything. The others are NASA Senior Scientist Dr. David Morrison, Dr. Donald Yeomans of JPL Near Earth Object Program, and Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Director of the Hayden Planetarium, all saying that the 2012 tripe is false.
Can these meterorites and asteriods be alien poopoo?
Well it burns up when it hits the atmospher it seems like it would burn much more readly than a rock. There might be a lot of alien crap up there in space even one alien after a month is a lot of crap what if there where hundreds compounded by months to years in space travel. lets say the alien did not flush every time he save up his sewer then decided to dump it all at once a giant ball of fecal or asteroid of crap coming at a planet. Do we half to take that sort of crap from aliens? It could ruin the whole planet.
Careful what you ask for… :>
In fact, surveys of "microimpacts" (small craters left in the shuttle, for instance, from man-made debris in orbit) have revealed that a sizable fraction of the dust-mote sized impactors were, in fact, frozen particles of human feces.
Apparently it was standard practice for a long time for space station inhabitants (…which basically meant the Soviet Union space station program…) to just dump their waste overboard.
I can’t find any documentation on this in a quick search; I’ll leave the below link to get you started. That, and your apparent interest in the subject. :>
Why are meteors far more likely to streak across the sky instead of coming straight down?
Such as the Tunguska blast caused by a meteror or comet streaking across the Siberian sky?
In response to nick, I add this to the question, "Why are objects are far more likely to enter at a shallow angle relative to the ground than a large one?"
It’s simply perspective.
If you are watching someone throw a baseball or cricket ball, unless he throws it straight at you, it will move in a path acroos your field of vision. If it was a flaming ball and you were watching him at night, they would make a visible path, just as meteors do.
I have seen a meteor strike head-on, and it just makes a small explosion in one spot – no trail.
The vast majority are not going to come straight at you, just by the law of averages. All those will appear to leave a trail
Your question:
I think I know what you are asking. The fact is that meteors move so fast that even if they come in only 10 deg off directly towards you, they will produce a fast streak. However, in general, if it make a shorter streak, it is probably a very steep angle; if it produces a long streak, it is probably a shallow angle.
I don’t know if the angle of strike is anything other than random. Larger meteoroids have been seen to go straight through the atmosphere at a very shallow angle, and off into space again.
That is a scenario that Apollo asronuats returning from the moon faced. Come in too steep and you burn up; come in too shallow and you bounce of the atmosphere into space and never come back. Apollo 13 was particularly tricky as they had to manually guide the moon lander which was never meant for that purpose.
When the earth goes through the astroid belt, do any satellites or the space station get hit?
Or is it that satellites get hit a lot, and no one says anything about that?
The earth DOES go through an arm of the asteroid belt that extends very close to earth’s orbital path that’s why we get spectacular metior showers every november.
now that that is out of the way.
yes sometimes satelites and or the spacestation do get hit. in fact they are more often getting hit than not. they are under nearly constant bombardment however like was earlier said most of what hits them is smaller than grains of sand. if they were to get hit by something largish though depending on where it hit exactly and how it is very likely that it would cause MAJOR damage. ultimately resulting in the satelites decaying orbit and eventuall reentry. this sort of thing happens all the time. personally i’m waiting for hubble to take a right good one right in that pretty little mirror it’s got. that will be one great big and expensive I TOLD YOU SO!
as for the space stasion. some of its components are like 15 years old. most of us don’t even have cars that old. we are talking potential for irreparable damage and Cascade FAILURE. any # of things could happen including but not limited to Explosive Decompression.
How to build a Garden Pond to house Comets?
Hello, i have decided to build a garden pond in my back yard because my comets were getting too big for their tank, so I’ve already looked up some websites on the matter and i was just wondering aside from the construction, is there anything else i need to consider? What type of plants should i have? I might go away on holiday so will they be okay for a few weeks? Will they eat the plants? How often will I need to change or top up the water? Thanks in advance
As for building the pond itself, several companies sell manufactured plastic ponds. All you have to do for these is dig a hole and drop it in. From there you can pretty it up by dropping rocks or plants around it.
The home of a Comet goldfish should contain densely planted regions as well as big open areas where the Comet goldfish can swim around without being entangled in aquatic plants. In an outdoor pond, you must select aquatic plant species suitable for your particular part of the world and it is therefore difficult to provide any general recommendations.

How is a falling meteorite the "time -reversal" of a fired object?
(1) An object is fired vertically upward from the Earth with an initial speed that is less than the escape speed. (2) A meteorite falls towards the Earth; at a certain height, the meteorite is at rest with respect to the Earth. Question: how is (2) the "time reversal" of (1)? Why can we use the same equation for both questions by reversing Vf to Vi? Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.
It isn’t. The effects of atmosphere aren’t symmetric. The meteorite is never at rest with respect to earth until it lands. If you could ignore the atmosphere, each is an object with a specific position and velocity, acted on by earth’s gravitational field.
Why is a meteor visible only once, but a comet several times?
A meteor is visible only once, but a comet may be visible at regular intervals throughout its lifetime. Why?
Comets are much farther away and do not impact the
Earth.
